Hands-On Sailing Lessons 13SSL01, 13SSL02 - Hands-On Sailing Lessons

Learn to sail!  Join us for six evenings of classroom and on-water instruction. You will learn and practice the basics of sailing in our safe and stable White 14’s and under the watchful eyes of our trained instructors.

Topics include: safety, knots, rigging, steering, trimming sail, and landing. If you choose to become a member, you may apply for helmsman certification, allowing you to take friends and family out for a sail. All the information you need is included in this course, although 4-6 hours of additional practice is recommended. Learn to sail now!

This course is held at beautiful Quinsigamond State Park under the auspices of Regatta Point Community Sailing. Note: You need to be a capable swimmer and should wear rubber soled sneakers or athletic shoes. Directions to Regatta Point will be sent upon registration.

Safe Power Boating13SSL03 - Safe Power Boating

Boating safety skills may save your life! This comprehensive course for pleasure power boaters covers essential information and regulations.

Topics include: choosing a boat, equipment for your boat, trailering your boat, handling your boat, your “highway” signs on the water, and the rules you must follow.
Additional material (and short State exam) will be available to youths aged 12-15 who require a Massachusetts Boating Safety Certificate to operate a power boat by themselves. This course also fulfills adult requirements for State Boating Safety Certificates in New England; many insurance companies will discount boat insurance premiums to graduates.

Note: Cost of text is $35 and is payable to instructor on first night.

Private Pilot License: Ground School13SSL04 - Private Pilot License: Ground School

How many times have you said, “Someday, I’d like to learn to fly?”  Soloing an aircraft and obtaining your Private Pilot License is the most rewarding experience you can imagine. Once you obtain your license, you can go places that once were out of reach for a weekend excursion. The process starts with Private Pilot License: Ground School.

Private Pilot License: Ground School complies with Federal Aviation Regulations 61.105 Aeronautical Knowledge Private Pilot Training.

Topics covered include aerodynamics, weather, Federal Aviation Regulations, flight planning, and flight maneuvers. Ground School will help you in preparing to take the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Test, a requirement for the license. At the completion of the ground school, you can take a free practice written test and, upon passing this test, a Certified Flight Instructor will provide an endorsement for you to take the FAA Knowledge Test.

10 weeks/30 hours

Ed Urbanowski has a Commercial Pilot’s Certificate with both Instrument and Instructor Ratings and has over 14,000 hours of flight time. He is also a Gold Seal Flight Instructor and both Basic and Advanced Instrument Ground Instructor. In addition, Ed has both an Airframe and Power Plant Mechanic Certificate and is the owner of Urban Aviation Services, Inc.

Badminton with Instruction13SSL05 - Badminton with Instruction

Looking for a new way to get a fun mid-week aerobic workout?  Badminton is not just a backyard sport for summer barbecues;  it’s a long-standing Olympic sport - a fast-paced game of reflexes equally popular with men and women. Discover how addictive this sport is, whether playing singles or doubles.

The instructor will go over all the rules and strategies of badminton and teach you how to perform various shots: clear, lob, drive, and drop shots. Class is organized into seven simultaneous games of badminton. Come meet new friends, learn a new sport, laugh, and have fun. You will be surprised at the sweat you break chasing a little birdie!  Note: Badminton racquets and shuttles are provided.

Table Tennis (Ping Pong) with Instruction13SSL06 - Table Tennis (Ping Pong) with Instruction

In Ping Pong, play is fast and demands quick reactions. Learn to play this international game using Timothy Gallwey’s coaching method which teaches the player to overcome fears, doubts, and distractions and play a better game. During a typical class, we will hit until we warm up, drill on the topic of the day, and then play singles and/or doubles.

Topics include:

  • getting ready - equipment, grip, ready position
  • consistent strokes - serve, forehand and backhand, topspin and backspin
  • combinations and variations of strokes - prolonging a rally, successfully ending a rally
  • rules for singles and doubles

8 weeks/12 hours

Rob and Chris Randall, a father/son duo, will team-teach this course. They have been playing competitively for many years.

Golf for Beginners 13SSL10, 13SSL11 - Golf for Beginners

This class is designed for the novice or beginner golfer who has the desire to learn the game of golf. We will cover correct grip, stance, full swing fundamentals, chipping, putting, and general golf rules. During the first class, the instructor will discuss club selection and needs. Join us and have fun learning a sport you can play well into your golden years. A great value compared to private lessons at $100/hour.

Note: Bring a mid-iron to the first class. The instructor will supply clubs for anyone who does not have them. Please meet the instructor at the front entrance of the school at 9:00 AM. Class will meet rain or shine.

This class is designed for individuals who have taken golf lessons or who have had some golf experience and would like to refine their skills. Join us and have fun learning a sport you can play well into your golden years. A great value compared to private lessons at $100/hour.

Dog Training Basics13SSL17 - Dog Training Basics

Please bring plastic bags and paper towels for clean-up.

Both you and your dog will enjoy this training class that uses positive reinforcement and reward-based training methods to teach your dog basic commands. You’ll learn how to use and adapt the class exercises to real life issues like leash pulling, biting and chewing, house training, and jumping.

Note: Please bring a collar (no choke chains or prong collars), a 6’ leash (no flexi leads), and some soft bite-size treats for your dog. All puppies must have begun or completed their vaccination series and be in good health to attend. Dogs of all ages welcome.
