13SLC01 American Sign Language (ASL): The Basics
Sign language, the native language of deaf people, is a beautiful and expressive form of communication and ASL is one of the most common languages in America. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to basic ASL.
Simple conversations, use of body language, and role playing will prepare students for the more complex grammar used in ASL. Through a variety of activities and assignments, students will be introduced to topics of importance to the deaf community, deaf culture, and deaf history. This class is unique! Students will learn different aspects of this fascinating language and this course may be tailored to students’ common areas of interest.

13SLC02 - French for Beginners
Learn to converse in a beautiful second language! French, the language of diplomacy and poetry, is spoken not only in continental France but also in Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Algeria, Morocco, the Congo, Cameroon, and nearby Quebec as well as many other nations touched by French culture. We’ll continue working on improving your conversational French with “just enough” grammar. Whether you joined us for beginner’s French or are returning to French after some time, we’ll review a bit and then add to your vocabulary, learn useful expressions, and become comfortable with both present and past tenses of common verbs. Conversation topics will include travel, culture, and geography of France.

13SLC04 - Portuguese for Beginners
Portuguese, the native language of Portugal and Brazil and the official language of five African countries (Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Angola, Mozambique and São Tome and Principe) and East Timor in Asia, is also the first language of thousands of North Americans. This course will concentrate on conversational Portuguese in practical, everyday situations and also will include a little about Portuguese culture. Strongly recommended for business people with Portuguese speaking customers, hospital workers, church workers, educators, spouses, friends, or people planning to travel where Portuguese is spoken.

Spanish is the official language of 22 countries and spoken by over 350 million people. Spanish is one of the fastest growing languages in the US, so the desire or need to learn Spanish could not be greater! This course will focus on conversational Spanish, extended vocabulary and the essential grammar needed to be able to put a sentence together. A bit of culture will be infused so students can understand the language and the people better.

13SLC12 - Basic Japanese
This is a beginner’s introduction to Japanese sounds, sentences and writing. The class features aural/oral single practice so you can talk and listen with understanding as you travel in Japan. You will learn that Japanese pronunciation and grammar are easy and uncomplicated. We will also take a glimpse at the Kanji (Chinese characters) and Kana syllabaries. Whether you are touring, on business or watching Japanese anime, this low pressure approach will be a fun way to start speaking Japanese.

William D. Heinold, an enthusiast of languages and cultures, has lived, studied and worked in Japan. He first studied Japanese as a Judo student, then as a teacher in Okinawa and later in Fujisan. As a Fulbright Scholar, Bill researched Chinese/Japanese Characters at the Japan Foundation, receiving an Advanced Japanese Studies Certificate.

For the student who:
- can read and write most conversational English
- still has a strong accent and is occasionally misunderstood
- needs a more extensive grammar course
You will:
- learn the fine points of grammar
- recognize and correct long-standing errors in speaking
- discuss American cultural patterns in society and the work place
- improve reading and writing skills
- build vocabulary skills
Note: This is not a college-level writing class and it does not focus on business English. Students need to purchase a three-ring binder for the class hand-outs.

She is also a TEFL instructor at the Boston Language Institute and teaches pre-MBA English courses as well as beginner, intermediate, and advanced conversational English.
