home job skillsS14HJ01, S14HJ02 - Welding Basics

This hands-on course will teach you the technical and practical knowledge of arc and gas welding and Metallic Inert Gas (MIG) welding in well-equipped work stations. Topics include safety precautions for cutting and heating; metal identification and welding techniques; tricks for removal of broken studs; welding of stainless steel, aluminum, and other alloys; and demonstration and theory working with TIG and MIG welding.
Related classroom work includes joint design, melting points, uses of electrode, and related sciences.

Note: You should have good eyesight and a steady hand. You may bring your own material if you have a project that needs welding. Recommended for those taking auto body. Tuition includes cost of all related welding supplies. Safety glasses and work gloves are required.

home job skillsS14HJ03 - Auto Maintenance and Engine Tune-Up Basics

Bring your car to class and learn how to make a wide range of mechanical repairs that will save you money. This is a small, personalized and loosely-structured workshop designed to let students work on their own cars, at their own pace. Whether you want to change spark plugs, PCV valves, gas filters, belts, brakes, or shock absorbers or install a new muffler, this is the place to learn. The emphasis will be on basic theory and diagnosis.

Note: Nightly projects must be able to be completed in a three hour time frame. There is no overnight storage of vehicles. Please bring safety glasses and wear appropriate shop apparel.

David Kaufman has 26 years of progressive experience in the automotive fields, including 23 years as a Certified Master ASE Technician.

This course offers an interactive blend of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on experience and is designed for a beginning woodworker eager to step into a professionally-equipped workshop to learn basic woodworking. You will be encouraged to select a project of your choosing consistent with your proficiency level and ability to complete it by the end of class.

Topics of instruction include: shop safety; use of hand tools; competency checks on portable and stationary woodworking equipment; types and use of measurement tools; characteristics of wood; and project selection, scaled drawings and planning.

Note: Students are responsible for supplying their own lumber and need to bring a ruler (scale), tape rule, pencil, note paper, and safety glasses to each class. Students must dress in appropriate shop apparel (closed toe shoes, hair tied back, no dangling jewelry, no baggy clothes). There is no storage space for projects to be left in the shop.

Mark Stone has been in the construction industry since 1989. He specializes in interior trim, including custom kitchens and built-ins.

home job skillsS14HJ07 - Auto Body Repair Basics

In this introductory course, taught in the school’s professional quality Auto Collision Shop, you’ll learn to use special auto body tools, dent removal techniques, patch forming, and body fillers. Repair dents, remove rust spots and surface imperfections. You will also learn paint preparation and refinishing procedures for partial vehicle refinishing. Each night the instructor will rotate from student to student, covering each individual project.

Note: Students will need instructor approval of their project during first class. Come prepared to work. There is no storage space for cars. Course fee covers the cost of equipment use and most of the basic supplies, i.e. filler, sandpaper, grinding wheels, welding supplies, etc. Safety glasses are required.

Pete Petkauskos is self-employed in the custom paint and auto body business. He has been producing award-winning custom paintwork in the region for over 37 years.

Home Firearm Safety S14HJ08, S14HJ09, S14HJ10, S14HJ11 - Home Firearm Safety

This Home Firearm Safety course is a Massachusetts State Police Certified Course. It covers the basic knowledge and skills necessary for owning, handling, and storing firearms safely.

This course fulfills Massachusetts Firearms Training Requirement LTC-007 and will allow people to apply for their License to Carry (LTC) or their Firearms Identification Card (FID).

Topics include the different types of firearm actions; the components and firing sequence of ammunition; how to clean firearms; loading and unloading firearms with dummy rounds; safe transportation of firearms; and important parental responsibilities.

Note: Participants must attend the entire course to obtain their certificates, so please arrive at least 15 minutes early.

Home decorating is difficult because there is so much to think about all at once. Cut out the chaos by learning proven interior design techniques you can apply to any style room or type of decor. We’ll give you starting points for how to choose color, lighting, wall and window treatments, furniture placement and accessorizing. We’ll take the impossible and shrink it down to the doable for Do-It-Yourselfers.

Please feel free to bring in fabric or paint samples, pictures of your room or any artwork that you want to incorporate into your decorating. This is a great opportunity to brainstorm with a designer and listen to other students’ ideas. Topics to be covered include: furniture placement and focal points; do-it-yourself projects to incorporate what you already own; color as a decorative element on walls, fabrics and more; and online tools and apps available for inspiration. Note: Please bring a “before” photo of a room you would like to work on.

If your son or daughter wants to start babysitting, we strongly recommend he/she take this workshop first. Babysitting can give your son or daughter responsibility, self-esteem, and the opportunity to earn and manage his/her own money. Siblings who watch over younger brothers and sisters will also benefit from this workshop. This course, taught by a licensed nurse, is tailored for kids age 11 to 15 and will follow guidelines developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Note: CPR is a separate topic and will not be covered here.

Topics include: babysitting do’s and don’ts; holding, feeding, and diapering an infant; playing with children of different ages; safe toys for children and home safety tips; infant equipment; basic first aid including the Heimlich maneuver; police and fire safety; babysitting etiquette; babysitter check lists; unexpected situations (power outages, strangers, etc.); and problem solving and discipline strategies.

Note: Please bring a bag lunch with a beverage.

Kathryn Antonucci is a licensed practical nurse who has taught this workshop to many babysitters. One of her former students saved someone’s life with the Heimlich maneuver.

Once you know the basics of Oxy-Acetylene welding, this hands-on course will teach you intermediate arc welding techniques like Arc (stick), MIG and TIG welding, as well as plasma cutting. MIG welding is much easier and faster for the welder than Oxy-Acetylene welding. TIG welding is used in many applications including the food and beverage industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and the nuclear industry.

Prerequisite: Students should have basic Oxy-Acetylene welding and cutting experience, including  knowledge of how to set-up, tear-down, and use

Oxy-Acetylene welding and cutting equipment.
Topics covered in class include shop safety; metal identification; electrode and filler metal selection; welding process selection; and bronze brazing. Related classroom work includes joint design; melting points; the effects of welding; visual weld inspection; and student projects from home that require welding.
