Health & FitnessS14HF01 - Basic Guide to Acupuncture, Chinese Herbs, and Acupressure

Join us to discover how this ancient body-mind system can help you achieve optimum health and well-being. We will discuss different acupuncture styles and how acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities, find out how to use Chinese herbs safely and where to obtain them, and learn how to apply pressure on vital points of the body to stimulate the flow of energy and improve circulation throughout the body.

Julie Dalbec is a licensed acupuncturist-herbalist and owner of the Marlborough Wellness Center. She is a Masters graduate of the New England School of Acupuncture in Newton with specific training in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Japanese Acupuncture Styles.

We’ll focus on specific student requests from the past few semesters and introduce all new material - balms, salves, lotions, creams, facial gels, foot and hair treatments, and a few old favorites from the original Spa Nights. Everything will be handmade with easy-to-find natural ingredients, scented or not, as you choose, with pure essential oils and botanical extracts, and all ready to use as soon as you get home!

Note: Please bring three or four one-cup lidded containers to take home your personalized creations!

S14HF07 - Meditation Workshop

Some meditation benefits are: more emotional self-control and less irritability; better concentration, creativity and mental focus; greater self-awareness and a greater sense of purpose; and a reduction of muscle fatigue and tension.

This Direct Approach Meditation Workshop consists of three basic parts: arriving; allowing everything to be as it is; and meditative inquiry. The meditation workshop will help you develop a meditation routine that can be done anywhere.

Note: Please wear comfortable nonrestrictive clothing. No previous knowledge of meditation required. Participants can use a cushion or chair to sit on during the meditation.

Joseph Whitley has more than 20 years of meditation experience and meditation instruction from various teachers including Lama Surya Das (Tibetan Dozgchen meditation) and Adyshanti (American/Zen meditation).

This 6 week series is ideal for first time hoopers. Students will learn the fundamentals of hooping which is a great low impact way to strengthen core stomach muscles, tone your body, increase coordination, get your heart rate up, and release built up stress. Hoops will be provided for use each class. Students will also have the option of ordering a custom made hoop.

Brian Walden is the Executive Director of Vegetable Circus, a nutritional movement arts program that explores eating, moving, and living healthy.

Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a dynamic workout system that is great for all ages and fitness levels.
The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you’ve got ZUMBA!

aS14HF18 - Simplified Tai-Ji-Quan (24 Forms)

Yang Style Tai-ji-quan (tai chi chuan) is a series of slow, deliberate martial arts postures and has been shown to enhance general health and physical fitness, as well as enhance physical and mental relaxation. This standardized routine of 24 postures is a low impact, moderately aerobic, therapeutic exercise appropriate for most age groups and almost any activity level.

Han Wei-Liang (William Heinold) practices Eastern and Western martial arts. His judo coach was Retsu Miura of Kobe, Japan. Bill trained under Teacher Zhang at Huaibei College and Master Teachers Liu Wan-Quan and Li Can-Guang of Xiangyang and Jiyang Gongyuans, Shanghai, and is a  certified Shanghai Park System Taiji Teacher.

aS14HF19 - Self Defense

We’ll discuss and demonstrate practical defenses and escapes from common types of “street aggression” like pushing, wrist grabs, body holds, hair pulling, choking, punching, kicking and more. We’ll break down the defense moves and discuss why they are effective. Each week we’ll practice these moves and you will gain competency and confidence.

We’ll also discuss pressure points of the body and how to strike them, plus joint locking techniques designed to incapacitate an attacker. Students are encouraged to ask questions to ensure they grasp the techniques. This class is designed for both men and women.

Note: Wear comfortable street clothes or sweatpants/shirt.

Tom Bruno has been teaching self defense courses for over 25 years, and is a Certified Instructor with International Martial Arts Federation. He combines the proven martial arts of Karate-Ju-Jitsu-Judo into a realistic approach for personal self-protection.

S14HF20 - Hip Hop and Latin Fusion Dance

We’ll cover basic to more advanced moves and dance styles in this fun filled high energy class. You’ll tone every muscle group and burn lots of calories as you dance to artists ranging from Beyonce, PitBull and Gloria Estefan to Shakira.


Hilary Rostas studied modern dance choreography while at Holy Cross College. She holds multiple fitness and dance certifications and has been teaching dance since 1998.
