Chinese medicine is an all-encompassing body-mind system used by approximately one third of the world’s population to promote physical and emotional well-being. This one night class will introduce you to three of its major components:

1) Acupuncture: we will discuss different acupuncture styles and how acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities

2) Chinese herbs: find out how to use them safely and where to obtain them

3) Acupressure: learn how to apply pressure on vital points of the body to stimulate the flow of energy and improve circulation throughout the body 

Join us to discover how this ancient body-mind system can help you achieve optimum health and well-being and to experience first-hand aspects of acupuncture, Chinese medicine, and acupressure.

1 night/2 hours

Julie Dalbec is a licensed acupuncturist-herbalist and is the owner of the Marlborough Wellness Center. She is a Masters graduate of the New England School of Acupuncture in Newton with specific training in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Japanese Acupuncture Styles. She is an experienced occupational therapist who can integrate traditional and modern medicine in her wellness clinic treatments.

How to Ease a Grumpy Back13SHF03 - How to Ease a Grumpy Back

Do you suffer from low back pain?  Do you feel tightness between your shoulder blades?  Do you sometimes wake with a stiff neck that doesn’t go away?  Many people brush off excess tension as a natural outcome of their busy lives. But you don’t have to accept chronic discomfort or resign yourself to pain as a necessary consequence of aging.

For half a century, the gentle, non-aerobic, Feldenkrais lessons have helped tens of thousands learn how to relieve back, shoulder, and neck pain. The class uses verbal directions to guide you in uncovering the subtle, habitual ways you hold your body that result in chronic fatigue and muscle strain. You will learn a series of slow, structured movements that help relieve your pain, improve your posture, and increase the flexibility and mobility of your spine. The classes are accessible to all abilities, with many participants experiencing postural change or stress-relief after each session.

Note: Please bring a mat and a small pillow and wear comfortable clothing. Note to previous students: Join us again this semester as we introduce new lessons and movements.

Marion Garver, ACSM CPT and a Certified Feldenkrais® Practitioner (www.feldenkrais.com), uses the Feldenkrais® method to teach people how to re-establish and maintain more optimum movement habits. Marion, an avid cyclist, has a fitness practice in the MetroWest area where she enjoys working with people who seek rejuvenating stress relief and fitness.

Everyday Massage for Everyday People (for Couples)13SHF02 - Everyday Massage for Everyday People (for Couples)

Join us for this fun class and learn the basics of one of life’s necessities - massage. Considered a luxury for many years, massage therapy is increasingly viewed as a necessity by health professionals due to its many therapeutic benefits. Just as our cars need to be maintained, so do our bodies!

We will cover the five basic Swedish strokes, broad muscles of the back, legs and arms, as well as relaxation techniques for the face and head. You will also learn to feel for feedback from the body by practicing on your partner. Open to couples and partnered friends, we invite you to learn, relax and feel great!

Note: Please bring two twin size sheets and a pillow. Instructor will supply lotion and oil.

Stephanie Palermo is a state licensed and nationally certified massage therapist as well as a certified hatha-vinyasa yoga instructor. She practices out of Marlborough, www.HolisticHealthOptions.net, and occasionally brings her holistic knowledge to West Africa where she has volunteered with children and adults.

Makeup Workshop13SHF04 - Makeup Workshop

Learn to be your own professional makeup artist and express your individuality in this fun, practical, hands-on workshop designed for all skin tones and ethnicities. Well applied makeup works if we notice the PERSON and not the makeup!

Topics include:

  • identifying skin types
  • step-by-step preparation of the skin
  • selecting makeup products and colors
  • the use of makeup tools and application techniques
  • exploring different makeup looks (perfect everyday, evening look, smokey look) and finding what best suits you

We’ll begin by discussing the topics above and then progress to the hands-on, interactive practice of techniques. Students are encouraged to bring makeup that they are currently using or, if needed, the instructor will have materials available.

We’ll create the all-natural, fresh spa treatments and bodycare products you pay too much for at the store - masques, facial washes, body scrubs, bath salts, and dusting powders - but we’ll add in fabulous hydrosols for healthy hair, bath bombs, and super rejuvenating facial gels. 13SHF07 - Meditation Workshop

Meditation research has shown that people who meditate for about 30 minutes a day for eight weeks had measurable changes in gray-matter density in parts of the brain associated with memory, sense of self, empathy, and stress.

Meditation has proven benefits:

  • Emotional:  less irritability, reduction in fight or flight response, and more emotional self-control
  • Mental:  better concentration, creativity and mental focus as well as a healthy replacement for drugs and alcohol
  • Spiritual:  greater self-awareness, the feeling of being more connected, and a greater sense of purpose along with the added benefit of helping you to resolve past issues that tend to get buried in the psyche and cause difficulties in the unconscious
  • Physical:  reduction of muscle fatigue and tension

This Direct Approach Meditation Workshop consists of three basic parts:

  • Arriving:  watching the breath, relaxing the body, etc.
  • Allowing everything to be as it is:  thoughts, emotions, and minor sensations are left as they are without getting involved with the mental dialogue associated with them.
  • Meditative inquiry:  questions are asked by the instructor during meditation which are not to be answered directly but should be allowed to permeate the mind. Meditative inquiry is included to broaden personal awareness, but is not a mandatory part of the meditation. It is, however, strongly encouraged.

The meditation workshop will help you develop a meditation routine that can be done anywhere. Note: Please wear comfortable nonrestrictive clothing. No previous knowledge of meditation required. Participants can use a cushion or chair to sit on during the meditation.

Joseph Whitley has more then 20 years of meditation experience and has had meditation instruction from various teachers including Lama Surya Das (Tibetan Dozgchen meditation) and Adyshanti (American/Zen meditation).

Each of us has a number of Guardian Angels who watch over us, heal and protect us, and give us inspiration. In this experiential workshop, you won’t just talk about angels, you’ll actually identify your angels by name, feel their loving presence, receive guidance and healing from them, and learn how to work with them on a daily basis. The only requirement for this course is an open mind. Note: Please bring a notepad and a pen.

Hula Hoop Exercise Class 13SHF09 Hula Hoop Exercise Class

Learn the art of hooping that has fast become one of the most fun and effective ways to stay fit!  This six week series is ideal for first time and beginner hoopers. Students will learn the fundamentals of hooping. Hooping is a great low impact way to strengthen core stomach muscles, tone your body, increase coordination, get your heart rate up, and release built up stress - all while laughing and having way too much fun for an exercise class!  Hoops will be provided for use each class.
