Beginner Belly Dancing13SDA01 - Beginner Belly Dancing

Want to do something that’s fun and unique? Want to do some hip twists and shimmies that sculpt your abs?  Then belly dancing is what you’ve been searching for. Belly dancing, with its exciting and exotic music and its slow, sensual, and graceful movements, allows you to express different emotions. Belly dancing is great for stretching and flexibility and a fun way to work your stomach, legs, and arms while burning calories. Go at your own pace and have a great time!  Note: Comfortable clothing should be worn. Please do not wear sneakers or rubber-soled shoes.

Gypsy Phillips has been teaching belly dancing for over 35 years and has completed master classes and workshops from many well-known belly dancers. She also performs with her troupe, “The Velvet Moon Gypsies”, at festivals and fairs.

Intermediate Belly Dancing13SDA02 - Intermediate Belly Dancing

This class is for anyone who already has experience working with combinations and veils and has the knowledge of all the basic hip movements. It will concentrate on more of the stomach movements including undulations, belly rolls, flutters, and vibrations. We’ll also do some choreography and work with props including veils, tambourines, canes, and finger cymbals. Come, let’s dance, and have fun while getting some exercise.

Note: Comfortable clothing should be worn. Please do not wear sneakers or rubber-soled shoes.

This beginners course will focus on the four most popular ballroom dances - two American (waltz and foxtrot) and two Latin (rumba and cha-cha). Don’t be a wallflower at weddings, clubs, or family events. Have fun learning with other beginners and dance with confidence. This could be your passport to romantic evenings under moonlit skies.

Dennis Frias has studied dance in several European countries and Latin America. He has taught international folk, Flamenco, and ballroom dance for over 24 years at Assabet After Dark and at other area schools and clubs.

Theresa Frias has been instructing Assabet After Dark’s Ballroom Dance and Swing classes since Fall 2010, and had been the assistant teacher of these classes since 2002.

Beginners Swing for Couples13SDA04 - Beginners Swing for Couples

This course will introduce you to the six and eight step swing. The eight step is sometimes referred to as triple step swing. Swing is still a very popular couples dance music that is played at most functions where there is dancing. Most of the steps and arm movements can also be applied to freestyle dancing. You’ll also learn the pretzel, sweetheart, tunnel, duckout, and even a back drop. Come loosen your hips and rock-around-the-clock!

Now that you’ve learned the basics of the six and eight step swing, it’s time to put it all together and take it to a new level of fun. You will learn how to put it all together and move in sequence with your partner. You will find out how easy it will be to take your newfound knowledge of different steps and put it to use in your own freestyle dancing.

Hip Hop & Latin Fusion Dance13SDA16 - Hip Hop & Latin Fusion Dance

Put on your dancing feet and let the Hip Hop and Latin music move your body. We’ll cover basic to more advanced moves and dance styles in this fun filled high energy class that will make you shake, shimmy and smile. You’ll tone every muscle group and burn lots of calories as you dance to artists ranging from Beyonce, PitBull, and  Gloria Estefan to Shakira. This class is geared for anyone who feels young, energetic and full of life!

Hilary Rostas studied modern dance choreography while at Holy Cross College. She holds multiple fitness and dance certifications and has been teaching dance since 1998. Dance is her passion!

Country Partner Dancing: Beginners (for Couples)13SDA07 - Country Partner Dancing: Beginners (for Couples)

Join us for an introduction to Country Partner dancing! Even if you have never danced before, you can learn the basics of this fun and easy style of partner dancing. This 6-week course will cover popular pattern dances like the El Paso and Shadow that are done at country dance clubs virtually everywhere. The focus is on fun and fundamentals. You’ll have fun, meet great people, and get a little exercise - all while listening to great country and pop music! Precise and patient instruction will be supplemented by a step sheet for every dance. Don’t sit back and let the others dance by. Get up and join the party!

Linda Gordon and Jim Paradis will show you the fun of pattern partner (circle) dancing! Linda is the president of the New England Country Dancers with over 20 years of dance experience. She and Jim have been teaching together for over three years.

Tap13SDA10 - Tap

5-6-7-Tap!  Whether you are a first-time dancer or simply looking to brush up on your tap skills, this is the class for you. Basic technique and simple dances will be taught each week with the perfect combination of classical and modern music. This hour-long tap class is packed with fun, rhythms, and an overall good time. So grab your tap shoes and join us for an evening of fun!  Note: Tap shoes or taps on your regular shoes are required.

Two Step for Beginners13SDA11 - Two Step for Beginners

Two Step, also known as the Texas Two Step, is downright fun!  It’s one of the most popular forms of dance at CW theme bars and dance clubs. Its appeal lies in the fact that it is relatively easy to learn and easy to perform in large groups.

In this beginner class, you’ll learn the basic moves of Two Step including basic rhythm, single and double turns, sweetheart position, and wrap and skaters positions. We’ll also work on improving your “lead and follow” dance skills, connection, and musicality. We’ll dance to contemporary music from Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift to Lady Antebellum.

Note: If you have dance shoes, great; if not, any shoe with a low heel that is secure on your foot and that slides on the floor will work (no sneakers). No partner, no problem. We’ll rotate during the lesson so that everyone will meet.

Line Dancing 101: Part One13SDA08 - Line Dancing 101: Part One

Hate to exercise, but like to dance?  Don’t have a partner?  No problem!  Line dancing is a fun way to do it all AND relieve your stress at the same time. This beginner’s class will show you how it’s done, step-by-step. You’ll learn the most popular line dances along with the classics, from country and oldies to pop, rock and blues. By semester’s end, you’ll be able to bring it to a dance floor near you!  Precise and patient instruction will be supplemented with a step sheet for every dance.

Mary Dragon was born into a military family where traveling allowed for dance instruction at various studios. She made the switch over to line dancing in 1995 after becoming “hooked” at the Bay Path Barn in Boylston. She became the choreographer and dancer with the Country Kickers Dance Team in 1996. Mary instructs all ages at a variety of venues.

Part Two brings line dancing to another level with popular, but slightly harder, line dances from country and oldies to pop, rock and blues. This session is upper beginner/easy intermediate and more progressive than Part One. Students should be familiar with most line dance terms. One upper intermediate dance will be introduced. You can still expect precise and patient instruction along with a step sheet for every dance.
