What do I do the first night of class?

• Classes starting the first two weeks of the semester:
  Please enter through the main entrance of the school and have a seat in the auditorium. After a brief orientation, instructors are introduced and students taken to class. Please try to arrive on time and avoid getting lost and confused in the building.
  
  Orientation and Instructor Introductions are given the first two weeks at the following times:
  6:00 PM, 6:30 PM, 7:00 PM, 7:30 PM, 8:00 PM.
  
  
• Classes starting AFTER the second week of the semester:
  Please enter through the main entrance and wait for your instructor in either the auditorium or the main lobby (refer to sign in main lobby). Instructors will meet their students at the designated start time and guide them to class. If you arrive late, please check with the switchboard or the Continuing Education Office for directions to class.
  
  
• Saturday Classes:
  If you are taking a class which meets on Saturday, please enter the building through the main entrance and wait for your instructor in the front lobby. If you arrive late, you will need to go to the Continuing Education Office for directions to class. Also see the section on weekend courses below.

Class cancellations & snow policy

Occasionally due to unforeseen circumstances (snow, power outages, instructor illness, etc.) the Center for Continuing Education must cancel a scheduled class. Cancelled classes are always made up (same day of week and time) by extending the finish date of the course, unless other arrangements are made between the instructor and the class and approved by the Director of Continuing Education. When the day school is cancelled due to snow conditions, evening classes are also cancelled. In the event day classes are not cancelled and the weather worsens, a decision will be made by 4 PM and relayed to the following radio and television stations: WBZ 1030 AM, WBZ TV, WXLO 104.5 FM, WRKO 680 AM,WHDH TV, WCVB TV News, WBUR 90.9 FM, FOX 25 NEWS, & WSRO 1470 AM

Holidays (No class dates)

• October 13 Columbus Day
• November 11 Veterans Day
• November 19 Exhibit Night
• November 26-28 Thanksgiving Break

Weekend Courses

If you are taking a class which meets on a Saturday or a Sunday, please meet the instructor in the front lobby just inside the main entrance. If the Assabet Valley School District cancels all weekend activities due to inclement weather, the cancellation will be broadcast on radio/TV. However, if the Assabet Valley School District does not cancel weekend activities, your instructor may still decide to cancel class. It will be the student’s responsibility to call the instructor on the morning of the class to see if class will be cancelled. (Remember to ask the instructor for his/her phone number on the first day of class). If class is cancelled, the course will be extended one week.

Nondiscrimination Policy

The Center welcomes and admits students of any race, color, religion, handicap, national and ethnic origin and extends all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded and made available to Continuing Education students. Children under the age of eighteen are permitted to register only with the express consent of the Director of Continuing Education and the Instructor.

Certificates and Course Credit 

Unless otherwise specified, all Assabet Continuing Education courses are non-college credit, non-graded courses. Colleges and universities may upon their own discretion issue proficiency credit for course work taken at Assabet. Certificates of proficiency and completion are issued to students enrolled in career training and professional development courses upon successful completion of a course or program.

Parking 

Adequate parking for students is provided in designated parking areas. The parking lots are well maintained and lit, and patrolled by security police. Please do not park in front of shop doors, or in the circular driveway.

Smoke Free School 

The Assabet Valley Regional Vocational School is a smoke free school. This includes use of all tobacco products in school buildings and busses, on school grounds, or at off-campus work sites by students, school personnel, and visitors.

Books & Supplies

Books: If a textbook is required for a class, it will be indicated next to the course fee in the course description. The book title, author, publisher and ISBN number of the text can be found on our web page in the course description. After registering, students will need to order their text from an on-line bookstore (i.e. amazon.com) or from a local bookstore (i.e. The Paper Store, Barns & Noble, Borders).

Supplies: Most craft courses start right in on the first night. Please remember to bring the supplies listed in the course description. If there is a material fee payable to the instructor on the first night, please remember to bring a check or cash for that amount.

Registration Fee 

The $5 registration fee is due once per term, per person. This fee is refundable ONLY if your course is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. If you register online, the registration fee will be waived.

Senior Citizens Discount

 Those 60 or over may request a discount of 10% off the course fee. This discount MUST be requested at the time of registration and a photocopy of your drivers license must accompany the registration form.

Tuition 

Must be paid in full at time of registration. Payment may be made by check, money order, Master Card, VISA, or cash. The Center for Continuing Education reserves the right to cancel classes with insufficient enrollment and to make changes in instructors or class schedules due to unforeseen circumstances.

Refund Policy 

If you withdraw from a course at least one week before the start date, you will receive a full tuition refund minus a $10 processing fee. No refund will be issued if you withdraw from a class less than one week before the start date. If we cancel a course due to insufficient enrollment, or if a course is filled when we receive your payment, you will be given a full refund.

If you withdraw less than one week before the class starts, no refund will be issued, but you will receive a course voucher based on the pro-rated schedule below. A course voucher may be used toward Assabet After Dark courses. Note: The course voucher schedule applies only to classes that meet at least four times.

• Withdrawal within one week before class starts: Full course voucher minus $5 processing fee
• Withdrawal after class has started, but before 2nd class meeting: Course voucher for 75% of course fee.
• Withdrawal after 2nd class has met, but before 3rd class meeting: Course voucher for 50% of course fee.
• Withdrawal after third class has met: No Course Voucher will be issued.

No Confirmations

The Assabet Center for Continuing Education does not send a confirmation of your enrollment. If the course you register for is full, we will notify you with your options.
