Learn Spanish as an Adult: Methods for Exploring the Pleasures of Language Study

16/08/2023

Below are techniques and strategies you can use to make your language-learning journey engaging, efficient, and (hopefully) fruitful.

Now that you have chosen to study Spanish, you should begin by planning your studies. Create a list of minor goals you wish to achieve and a significant, concluding objective that will serve as your destination. Assign a specific amount of time to each of your little dreams and work to achieve them individually.

Make Spanish Study a Habit

I recognize that this is easier said than done, but the more you regard your Spanish studies as something you must do at specific times on specific days, the more ingrained it will become in your brain and the quicker it will become a habit.

When I acquire a new language (every day of my existence), I devote at least 30 minutes after work to it. This is no longer a requirement but a habit that helps me unwind and unwind before bed.

Track Your Progress and Examine, Examine, Examine!

Occasionally, say once per week, you will need to monitor and evaluate your progress. If you need more time to achieve specific objectives, rewrite the plan and continue to update and modify it to your current circumstances.

Change does not equate to failure. We are all adults and have lifestyles!

The Instructional Methods

The theory is straightforward, but how do we acquire this exquisite language? What should we do to maximize our limited time and achieve results as soon as possible?

Label your residence literally!

Take some notepaper and write the Spanish and English terms for furniture, domestic items, electronic devices, etc., on it (or just in Spanish). Then, adhere them to the corresponding objects so you can always see their Spanish names when you gaze at or reach for them!

It is indeed as simple as it sounds. Additionally, seeing the words in Spanish every day will aid in their memorization with literally minimal effort.

Use programs to immerse yourself in the content

Immersion is one of the best methods to acquire a language. Even if you are learning Spanish at home, there are various methods to surround yourself with Spanish.

Let's examine a few programs that you can use to immerse yourself:

  1. FluentU,
  2. Language Zen,
  3. and LingQ

One subject at a time

Learning vocabulary words by themes is a simple way to expand your vocabulary. Review the numerals, colors, weather expressions, animals, etc. You choose!

Choose a topic to concentrate on. Learn everything there is to know about it, including the vocabulary, expressions, underlying grammar, pronunciation of each word, etc. Only move on to the next topic once you have mastered the current one and know the meaning of all the words you have selected.

Commit to memory and reiterate phrases, sentences, and idioms

Some of my pupils favor what I refer to as The Parrot Method. They create an inventory of the terms and expressions they wish to learn and attempt to listen to and repeat them as often as possible.

Those who have a mild aversion to grammar principles and prefer a more hands-on approach to learning a language can benefit significantly from repetition.

Make YouTube your closest companion

That is precisely my practice! However, YouTube can be utilized for much more than simply conversing with oneself in the mirror. You can access millions of videos teaching you Spanish from the ground up. You can search for particular grammar topics, vocabulary listings, and reading and listening exercises... Everything is available there.

Use the correct grammar literature.

No two pupils are identical, just as no two grammar texts are identical.

As with phone applications, thousands of grammar books are available, but you must select the one that best suits your needs. Examine various grammar resources before deciding on one, whether it is a book filled with explanations and examples or a workbook to get your pencil and mind moving.

Engage in Spanish gaming

Everyone has a favorite board game, including myself! Make an effort to obtain Spanish versions of your favorite titles. They will be of great assistance and will make learning enjoyable.
