9998 Basic Coastal Navigation You will learn how to read and interpret nautical charts, use navigator's tools and the compass, prepare dead reckoning plots, plot and use visual landmarks, and use publications such as the Coast Pilot and Light List. Chart work will include measuring and plotting latitude and longitude, essential for productive use of electronic navigation tools such as GPS. A combination of lectures, practice problems, and in-class chart work will exercise your new skills from this U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary course. Prerequisite: Graduate of any boating safety class. Class is limited to 20 students. Cost of text, chart and materials: $65 and is payable to instructor on first night of class. 9 weeks/18 hours Ned Kroeker, Tom Amlicke and John Polomarenko, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Specialists in Navigation.
