According to the Massachusetts State Board of Electrical Examiners, before you take the licensing exam you must first complete: • 8000 HOURS OF EMPLOYMENT (approximately 4 years) as a learner or apprentice under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman. 600 HOURS OF TRAINING (8 Modules - approximately 75 hours each) in electrical code from an approved school. (Note: If you started working as an electrical apprentice before July 31, 2001, you are “grandfathered” under the old 300 hours classroom training requirement. If you started working as an apprentice after July 31, 2001 you must complete 600 hours of classroom training. The 8000 hours apprentice employment requirement has not changed.) Note: There is no set order for the two requirements listed above. For example, you may start working as an electrical apprentice first or you may start the schooling first or you may do both concurrently.
